It is an abrupt surge of intense fear or intense discomfort that reaches a peak within minutes. It triggers severe physical reactions when there is no real danger or apparent cause. Panic attacks can be very frightening. When panic attacks occur you might think you are losing control, having a heart attack or dying. Many people have just one or two panic attacks in their lifetime. but if you experienced recurrent or unexpected panic attacks and spent long periods in constant fear of another attack then you may have a condition called panic disorder.
  • Palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering
  • Feelings of choking
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Nausea or abdominal distress
  • Feeling dizzy, unsteady, light-headed, or faint
  • Chills or heat sensations
  • Paresthesias (numbness or tingling sensations)
  • Derealization (feelings of unreality) or depersonalization (being detached from oneself)
  • Fear of losing control or “going crazy.”
  • Fear of dying
